A fatal car accident on Interstate 15 in Payson, Utah, claimed the lives of two individuals on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 27, 2025. The I-15 crash, which involved a head-on collision, occurred just south of the Main Street interchange around 4:50 p.m.

Details of the Payson Car Accident

According to the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP), the crash began when a blue Kia SUV traveling northbound veered out of its lane for unknown reasons. The vehicle crossed through the cable barrier in the median, became airborne, and entered the southbound lanes of I-15, where it collided head-on with a green Jeep Gladiator.

Authorities described the incident as a wrong-way crash and a high-speed head-on collision, with both vehicles traveling at freeway speeds near the 75 mph limit. The force of the impact was devastating, and both drivers—who were the sole occupants of their vehicles—were pronounced dead at the scene. While the victims have been identified as adult males, their names and ages have not been released.

Additional Vehicle Damage and Traffic Impact

Following the initial auto accident, two other vehicles drove through the debris field and sustained damage, but no further injuries were reported.

The fatal car accident caused major traffic disruption on southbound I-15. Law enforcement shut down the southbound lanes near exit 253, diverting traffic onto local roads. Congestion extended at least seven miles into Spanish Fork, and drivers were urged to seek alternative routes. The interstate was fully reopened by approximately 10:00 p.m. Northbound traffic was also delayed as crews worked at the crash site.

Ongoing Investigation

The Utah Department of Public Safety and Utah Highway Patrol are actively investigating the cause of this tragic traffic accident. Factors such as mechanical failure, weather conditions, and driver behavior are all being examined as part of the ongoing inquiry.
