Millcreek, Utah — A devastating high-speed rollover crash in the early hours of Thursday morning has left a 22-year-old man in critical condition. The single-vehicle accident occurred just after 3:00 AM near 4500 South and 500 East, causing significant damage and traffic disruption in the area.
Crash Details: What Happened in Millcreek?
According to Lt. Shane Manwaring with the Unified Police Department, the driver was traveling eastbound on 4500 South when he failed to properly navigate the turn onto 500 East. As a result, the car left the roadway, struck a street sign, went airborne, and ultimately collided with a tree, flipping in the process.
The rollover led to extensive vehicle damage, with debris scattered across 4500 South between 500 and 600 East. Authorities immediately shut down the road and advised motorists to seek alternate routes during the busy morning commute.
Driver Sustains Life-Threatening Injuries
The 22-year-old driver, whose name has not yet been released, sustained multiple traumatic injuries, including a compound fracture to one arm. He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
At this time, the cause of the accident remains under investigation. It is not yet known whether speed, distraction, fatigue, or impairment were contributing factors.
Legal Insights from a Utah Personal Injury Attorney
According to the attorneys at London Harker Injury Law, single-vehicle accidents like this one raise important legal questions—particularly when serious injuries are involved:
“Even in a single-car crash, passengers—or the driver’s family—may be entitled to compensation if the accident was caused by defective road design, a mechanical failure, or even third-party negligence,” said a London Harker representative.
Utah follows a modified comparative negligence rule under Utah Code § 78B-5-818, meaning a driver can still recover damages if they are less than 50% at fault. If mechanical failure or unsafe road conditions contributed to the crash, liability may extend beyond the driver.
Additionally, underinsured motorist coverage (UIM) may apply, especially if the victim faces long-term medical costs and rehabilitation. These types of policies are often underutilized, but they can be critical in single-vehicle cases.
Traffic Disruptions and Public Safety Advisory
Emergency responders remained on the scene for several hours Thursday morning to clear debris and investigate the incident. Commuters were asked to avoid the area around 4500 South and 500 East as cleanup efforts continued.
Residents in the Millcreek area have voiced concerns about visibility and signage at the intersection—a potential factor that may be considered in the ongoing investigation.
