A tragic multi-vehicle crash in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 13, 2025, has left one person dead and several others hospitalized near 5200 South on SR‑111 (Bacchus Highway) in Magna, Utah. The incident, which unfolded around 12:58 a.m., is believed to have involved an impaired driver, according to the West Valley City Police Department.
The Scene of the Crash
Authorities responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a severe collision just outside West Valley City. Upon arrival, officers encountered a devastating scene involving several vehicles and a crash site that stretched across a wide portion of the roadway.
One woman was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
A second individual, trapped inside a vehicle, required extrication and remains in critical condition.
Several other victims were treated for injuries ranging from minor to serious.
While initial reports suggested a rollover, police later confirmed multiple vehicles were involved in the accident.
Fleeing the Scene and Arrests
Several occupants from one of the vehicles reportedly fled the scene on foot immediately after the collision. Hours later, police located and arrested the suspected driver, who is believed to have caused the crash while impaired.
Two additional individuals who fled have since been located and are now cooperating with the investigation, according to Sgt. Jeff Smith of the West Valley City Police.
Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation
Due to the magnitude of the crash and the need to reconstruct the scene, SR‑111/Bacchus Highway was closed between 5400 South and 4100 South for most of Sunday.
Authorities have not released the names of the deceased, the critically injured, or the suspect in custody. The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information—including dashcam or surveillance footage—to contact the West Valley City Police Department.
Legal Ramifications of Impaired Driving in Utah
Driving under the influence (DUI) in Utah is a serious offense. According to
Utah Code § 41-6a-502, it is illegal to operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.05% or higher. Criminal penalties increase dramatically when impaired driving results in serious injury or death.
Victims and their families may have grounds to file a wrongful death or personal injury claim, especially when negligence or criminal behavior like DUI is involved.
