Wasatch County · Motorcycle Crash Injuries
The Heber Valley is riding country, which is exactly why it is dangerous. Canyon routes bring riders in from across the Wasatch Front, seasonal traffic brings drivers who do not know the roads, and the two meet on curves with no margin for error. When a driver puts a rider down, we prove what actually happened.
Why Heber City
US-40 through Daniels Canyon is the signature Heber-side route: long grades, sweeping curves, and a steady mix of local traffic, trucks, and recreational vehicles towing trailers. Crashes here tend to involve a vehicle crossing the centreline on a curve, or a driver misjudging a pass and closing on an oncoming rider.
Main Street and the US-40 corridor through town are a different problem. Through traffic arrives at highway pace and meets a walkable downtown with frequent turning movements, so the left-turn collision is common here too. Seasonal peaks make it worse: visitor traffic is unfamiliar with the intersections and hunting for parking.
SR-32 and the Jordanelle routes carry weekend riders toward the reservoir and Park City, sharing the road with boat trailers and RVs whose drivers have long blind spots and wide swings. Heber sits at the top of the Provo Canyon system as well, so riders coming up US-189 arrive on the Heber side of the same corridor.
Heber City cases are filed in Wasatch County and heard in the Fourth District. Our office is at 150 N Main St.
Common Causes
Identifying the cause is the first step to proving liability. These are the patterns we see most often in and around Heber City.
Drivers drifting wide on canyon curves into an oncoming rider.
Misjudged overtakes on two-lane canyon road.
Turning across a rider on the Main Street corridor.
Long vehicles with wide swings and limited rear visibility.
Sand, gravel, and winter treatment left on curves.
Visitors reading signs instead of watching the road.
The Difference
Adjusters and jurors assume the rider was speeding. We disprove it.
Utah does not require PIP on a motorcycle policy. Fault must be proven.
No cage, no airbags. The same impact that dents a door breaks bones.
Partial fault reduces a claim. Under 50%, it does not end it.
Scene marks, video, and witness memories fade within days.
Accountability
A motorcycle accident can involve more responsible parties than victims expect, each with separate insurance.
Most often a driver who turned left across a rider or changed lanes without looking.
When someone else was driving, the owner's policy is often the one that pays.
Delivery, rideshare, and work vehicles bring commercial coverage with them.
Road defects, gravel, and unsafe design. A notice of claim may be due within one year.
Defective components or negligent service that caused a mechanical failure.
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage after a hit-and-run or an underinsured driver.
Want the complete breakdown, strict liability, insurance coverage, evidence, compensation, and deadlines? Our statewide Utah motorcycle accident hub covers it in depth.
Recovery
Utah's no-fault system means you start with your own PIP coverage, but serious injuries let you pursue the at-fault parties for full damages.
Medical bills, future care, lost wages, lost earning capacity, and property damage.
Pain and suffering, emotional distress, disfigurement, and loss of consortium.

Questions
Possibly. Where loose gravel, debris, or a road defect caused the crash, responsibility can rest with the government entity or contractor responsible for the roadway. These claims are subject to a much shorter clock: a notice of claim may be required within one year. Photograph the surface and the location immediately, because road crews clear it quickly.
With physical evidence rather than competing accounts. Gouge marks, debris distribution, and the final rest positions establish the point of impact and which side of the line it was on, and damage geometry on both vehicles confirms the angle. Accident reconstruction is often worth it in canyon cases where there are no independent witnesses.
Not to your right to recover. Out-of-state drivers are bound by the same Utah traffic laws, and their insurance follows them. Unfamiliarity with a canyon road is an explanation, not a defense. We handle claims against out-of-state insurers regularly.
Because Utah does not require it. Utah Code 31A-22-302 provides that a motorcycle policy is not required to carry personal injury protection, which places riders outside Utah no-fault system. Nothing pays your first medical bills automatically, so establishing the other driver fault is central to the claim.
Generally four years from the date of the crash under Utah Code 78B-2-307, and two years for wrongful death. Government-entity claims, including road defect claims, may require notice within one year. Canyon scene evidence is weathered away far sooner.
