WELLINGTON, UTAH – May 12, 2025 — Early Monday morning, a tanker truck carrying crude oil crashed into a home on State Route 6 in Wellington, Utah, causing serious injuries to five people and extensive damage to the residence. The accident occurred at approximately 6:20 a.m. and has prompted a thorough investigation by the Utah Highway Patrol.
“We’ve seen countless accidents, but a tanker truck driving into a home while a family sleeps is the kind of nightmare no one should endure or expect. We are glad that everyone was able to walk away from the accident, and we look forward to understanding more about how this event happened in the first place.” – Kurt London
Details of the Crude Oil Tanker Truck Accident
According to authorities, the tanker truck was traveling eastbound on SR-6 when it suddenly veered off the road. The truck struck six parked vehicles at an auto repair shop, crashed through an intersection, collided with a utility pole and fire hydrant, and then smashed through a fence and open field before colliding with a residential home.
The impact caused the cab of the truck to become embedded deep within the house, making it unlivable. Photos from the scene revealed severe structural damage and downed power lines draped across the truck.
Victims and Injuries from the Wellington Truck Crash
Five people were hospitalized after the crash, including:
An elderly couple who lived in the home, both seriously injured. They were initially transported by ambulance and later airlifted for advanced medical treatment.
A 12-year-old boy who was asleep on the couch at the time of the crash miraculously escaped physical injury, although his bedroom was destroyed.
Two truck drivers inside the tanker suffered injuries, with one in moderate condition and the other in serious condition.
Though the boy was unharmed, he was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Officials have yet to release full details on the injuries of all involved.
Drowsy Driving Under Investigation as Possible Cause
Preliminary investigations by Utah Highway Patrol lieutenants Cameron Roden and Evan Kirby indicate that drowsy driving may have contributed to the crash. No official cause has been confirmed at this time.
Emergency crews from Rocky Mountain Power responded to a power outage affecting nine nearby customers. Before the tanker was safely removed, hazardous crude oil had to be carefully emptied from the vehicle.
